Seeing this is my first ever post, I want to talk about having awareness around certain things and being careful.
Social media influencers are such a massive part of our lives now due to the evolution of technology and it will further increase but it's your OWN job to follow at a certain extent. I was actually going to only talk about ingredients and following what's best for your skin even if it's the most popular ingredient that works for your skin but recently there has been a lot of commotion on social media regardless of what their speciality is about.
Social media is literally a filter of people to show the best versions of themselves to the public, it's what we humans automatically do - try to only show the good side to the world but we have to keep reminding ourselves that there is always two sides to everything. Obviously follow their fashion sense, follow their skincare routine, follow what they preach but ONLY to an extent, because 1) You’ll be losing your originality! And 2) What is good for them or rather “seemed” to be good for them, might not be good for you.
Let's take skincare as an example. Almost everyone I know says aloe vera is amazing for their skin, things like the Mario Badescu Sprays are the best toners out there but whenever I use either of them, I break out. I've tried loads of different aloe vera, infact I love aloe vera drinks! But for my skin, it never seems to work out well for me. This is also the case with the Mario badescu sprays, all three of the brand’s toners do not work for me whatsoever! At first, I was confused. Confused to why it works for every beauty blogger out there as well as my friends but it doesn’t work out for me? It's even a scientific fact that aloe vera is great for your skin!
"So why does it not work for me?"
That's the worst mindset you could have. Now I might sound like a hypocrite sooner or later as I will also be recommending my holy grails or what to avoid or not to avoid but its up to you how to utilise the information. It's honestly okay! It's okay if aloe vera doesn’t work for you, it's okay if you cannot wear a particular kind of item, it's okay if a certain make up look doesn’t suit you it's honestly okay!!
I used to always think that all beauty bloggers were right until I started working in a beauty store, realising that different things work for different people and the key is knowledge - I cannot emphasise it enough!!!!!! Please please please, regardless of what myself or any other beauty blogger or influencer says, please always do your research, it doesn’t take long! Do trial patches, this is so vital so you don’t end up ruining your skin.
I remember last year I went to the doctors to get a prescription for a cream I had for my mild acne but then the doctor gave me something 10000x stronger and said "this is what everyone has and works much better.” However, after I applied it over my face, my face literally got burnt (I know I could have sued her but couldn’t be asked then LOL). Luckily, my cousin is a nurse so I asked her why is my skin red and why does it feel sooooo painful? She goes "its not for your skin at all, its for extreme cases which you don’t have!" From this, I learnt that less is actually more. I didn’t have to go and agree to a stronger medicine. I could have just stuck to my DIY remedies.
There are obviously things that is suited for everyone universally because it just makes sense to do so such as making sure to get non comodogenic foundation just so your pores are not blocked but the main point is how you use and apply the information and this goes to everything, not just skincare! Bloggers might say to use this expensive brand bc it works for them, but just because it works for the money makers doesn’t mean it’ll work for you.
Learn the ingredients; I didn’t realise how important learning what ingredients mean what until I started working in the beauty store I am currently working in; it’ll only help you in the long run. If possible, take samples and do little patch tests, its better than ending up with permanent damage.
If you’re really passionate about make up and skincare like I am, then you would do your research because not only you’re protecting yourself, you are gaining knowledge which in my opinion is amazing because knowledge is power and who knows, you could end up advising someone before they end up making a terrible mistake that could literally save them, whether its money or whether its damage to the face!
Here’s to “knowledge is power”..
Forever & Always, T x
